UAE Trade Licence: Types, Process and Renewal

A trade licence records the activities a business is authorised to conduct under a specific licensing authority. It sits inside a wider setup: the legal entity, ownership, premises, immigration file, tax registrations and any sector-specific approvals.

The UAE Government's mainland guidance says the conventional setup sequence begins with identifying the business activity, selecting the legal form, applying for the trade licence, registering the trade name, obtaining initial approval, arranging the relevant constitutional documents, selecting a business location and securing additional approvals where required.

The licence labels you see depend on the emirate and authority. UAE Government guidance notes commercial, industrial and professional categories among the licence types, while Dubai also has authority-specific licence formats. The practical question is therefore not ‘Which licence sounds right?’ but ‘Which activity code accurately describes what the company will sell or do?’

If a company plans several activities, check whether the activities can sit on the same licence and whether any combination triggers extra approval, premises or qualification requirements.

• Search the official activity list for the exact activity or closest approved classification.
• Confirm the legal forms allowed for that activity.
• Check whether an external regulator must approve the activity.
• Confirm whether the planned premises or facility type is acceptable.

Dubai's official business portal describes mainland and free zone as the two main setup options in Dubai. DET manages licensing of mainland companies, while each free zone has its own rules and licensing authority.

That distinction affects more than the licence certificate. It can influence where the company operates, facilities, visa capacity, authority fees, renewal mechanics and the route for conducting activities outside a free zone.

Requirements vary by activity and legal form, but common inputs include shareholder and manager identity documents, trade-name choices, constitutional documents, premises evidence and approval documents from other government entities where required.

The fastest applications are usually the ones where the business activity, ownership, legal form and premises already agree with each other before submission. Reworking one of those after filing can create avoidable delays.

Do not compare only the first-year promotional figure. Ask which charges recur at renewal, whether premises must be renewed, whether immigration or establishment files carry separate costs, and whether any external approvals expire on a different schedule.

For a useful quote, request authority charges and professional fees as separate lines. That makes later changes and renewals much easier to understand.
